DevHub Reviewed ... Again

It was a year ago that I did my first review of DevHub - and came away impressed. I continued using the platform to develop a geo domain and some other product names. The more I used it, the more limitations and frustrations I found. The glitz and glamor of drag and drop site design very quickly fades and the underlying functionality of the tools you are provided starts to show some serious holes.

That's not to say I haven't had any success. In fact, I've gotten ranked for various keywords and in total my half dozen sites that weren't getting any significant traffic parked are now receiving an average of around 700 visitors a month or so the last few months. Most of that is to one site in particular - an adult toy, exact match .US domain (and largely due to Yahoo ranking it #2). And at various times, my other sites would pop up on the first page of a search engine and I'd get some nice traffic spikes. So there's traffic and it's gotten to be fairly consistent. So let's talk about the next step: revenue.

The revenue is horrible

My RPM (revenue per 1k page views) is just as bad as my worst performing parked domains. Someone else may have a different experience, but in my book, generating < $2 in revenue in a month where I had over 2k page views is just pathetic. Is it because the sites aren't optimized? Entirely possible, but honestly I don't know *how* to improve the performance because DevHub provides absolutely no metrics about where that revenue is coming from save their breakdown by CPA, CPM, CPC, etc. What I need to know is *which* products are working, which affiliate offers are producing and which ones aren't (one could argue none of them are working but I'll get to that in a second).

And then when they do break down on a daily basis where the revenue is coming from, a disturbing picture appears: the CPA is horrible! On many, many occasions, the CPA is a single penny. CPA! That means someone bought something, took an action... and my share is a whole freakin' penny. Even at a 50/50 split of Amazon CPA revenue, assuming Amazon is paying it's a mere 3-4% commission, it means that the product that was purchased had to have been worth less than a dollar! And that's assuming a very demanding 50/50 split. Honestly the split has to be a lot worse than that for those numbers to work out, but as they don't tell you the split, they don't tell you the products that were purchased, they don't tell you the ad unit that was clicked... You have no idea!

Now onto the review!

But this is a review of the newly redesigned DevHub, not a condemnation of their revenue sharing (okay, it's both!). The new look of DevHub is really fun, with lots of game design elements and "social networking" features. That is, if you define social networking features as tons of popup spam telling to you "share this on face book and twitter". The game design features are an interesting twist as you get points and coins as rewards for adding more content to your site and customizing it's layout using the same rather limited theming tools that were available before. There are least a half dozen things in the "marketplace" for you to purchase with your coins or you cold hard cash - things that were essentially available to you without having to spend your coins or cold hard cash before. This is a new feature and the marketplace just launched, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that the marketplace will eventually be flushed out. But if the marketplace is as ignored as the widgets were in the previous release, then I don't think the game concept is going to be anything but a nuisance. The good news is that you can apparently turn the game elements off, but the only setting I found to do this is in my account settings and when I tried to turn it off it said that data was required. I'm guessing in order to change the game elements, I have to also reset my password. Who knows.

In my original reviews, I identified a number of issues that bothered me regarding things like duplicate products being displayed (at varying prices), widgets not working at all, missing features (like creating my own directory site), etc. Surely, a year later and a whole new version being launched will mean that these basic problems will be addressed, right? Nope. Oh, the broken widgets aren't broken any more.. they are just gone. There are a few new features that have snuck in like the ability to include your twitter feed, but the "product selection" process is still just as broken as before. They now offer you the choice of which product feed you want to use - Amazon, Shopping.com or Pop Shops, but even inside those feeds you get duplicates. You still can't hide a product you don't want displayed either, so it becomes a frustrating game of "if I create 3 product feeds of 1 product each with just the right search keywords I'll be able to display the list of products I really want". And without dipping into your own google adsense or other ad provider accounts, you won't have any choice over the type, layout, etc of the ad unit you want to display.

To sum up

You might think I hate DevHub, but really, I don't. I do hate the closed nature of it - especially in regards to reporting, the poor revenue share, the risk of being delisted at any moment when Google finally gets sick of them, the lack of focus on making the product better and more useful (instead of the current focus on making it more "fun") and limited design options... but other than that, it's a fine platform! Really! If you want to just throw a site up and put a few monetization features on it, then it certainly works for that... I've spent less than an hour per site and those 6 hours or so of time have yielded a whopping $20 in revenue from various sources - mostly in the last 6 months. That's a yearly rate of maybe $50 - enough to cover the registration fees for those 6 domains.

Until DevHub gets serious about helping developers optimize and profit from their site, there's really no reason to invest heavily in the platform. Instead, invest in building your own solutions, buying off the shelf products and keeping 100% of the revenue for the extra effort. If nothing else, you'll sleep a lot better knowing you aren't at the whim of DevHub.

DevHub for Geo Domains

Whether you have a generic city/state/region domain name, or if you have a City+something name, DevHub is a quick way to get a site up and running. Most of my geo domains use the .IN extension, but those will be running on our Vocav.com platform. I have a couple of geos using other extensions though and so I decided to experiment with DevHub for building out a site for StSimonsIsland.info (I also own StSimons.info). If you don't live in the Southeast (and even if you do), you may not have heard of this small resort community, but it's located in the Golden Isles of Georgia along with Sea Island and Jekyll Island and just a short distance from the more famous Hilton Head Island. It's a gorgeous little community and a popular destination for Georgians in that it's not as crowded or touristy as some of the other nearby beach resort towns. Anyway, this post is about the DevHub development experience for Geo Domains... so let's dig in!

St. Simons Island

Listings, Listings and more Listings

Job listings, Real Estate listings and Business Directory listings all come out of the box free and with revenue sharing built in with the DevHub site creator. Generally you only have to drag and drop the listing you want onto the page, provide some search criteria (or let the page try to come up with the search criteria by itself) and you are done. Unfortunately, there's really not a way to go beyond that basic setup so if you want to customize what you show or how it's shown you are mostly out of luck. A few things can be done though to make the listings more inline with what you want - for example you can drop multiple listings onto the same Page and that way you can show, say "Homes for sale" for two different Zip Codes on the same page. This is a nice feature but it's not really the level of customization I want. Hopefully this will be addressed in a future release of DevHub.

News you can't use

There is also a prebuilt "News" item you can drop onto your pages, but this news listing is very picky and the sites I've setup so far haven't found any useful news for the search phrases I've used. You would think *something* would show up for the search term "Georgia" at least. I mean, there has to be news in Georgia, right? If this feature gets fleshed out or the filter issue is addressed, then this could potentially be a very nice feature, but as it is, it's very hard to use.

What is very easy to setup however is RSS Feeds. So if you find a good feed (or build one yourself using aggregator tools like Yahoo Pipes - a post on this will be coming up in the future), then you are in business. Of course, I'd like more customization of how the RSS feeds are displayed (for example, showing a profile image next to each post would be nice), but it's functional as is.

The business listing for St. Simons Island is probably not typical of most cities due to the small size and seclusion of the island, but right now there's only one business listed, so I'll likely have to go out and get an additional data feed for this as ... well... there's more than one business on St. Simons Island. You're mileage may vary.

Finally, in regards to listings, I'd really like to have the option for monetizing the "Add your listing" for jobs, properties and businesses, but there would have to be a way in DevHub to ensure that whoever paid to be listed through my signup link got shown in my results. I think that would be an incredibly valuable feature though and one I may need to take into my own hands if DevHub doesn't provide it soon.

Monetization that's missing

Widgets for Hotel bookings, flights and car rentals are a dime a dozen... I've thrown a quick Priceline widget up on the Travel section, but ideally this is something that DevHub could already have worked out for those that don't have their own affiliate setup. It would make sense for DevHub as they could skim some more revenue from these types of sites and it would make sense for newbie publishers who don't know or don't want to know how to setup a 3rd party hotel affiliate. In fact, it would be nice for me too for sites I'm too lazy to do much with, though I will come back to this Travel section soon.

I'd also like to see general classifieds, and specifically autos, and maybe a "Rental Listing" feature as well, though these are more difficult to come by and more difficult to monetize. I'll probably add in my own 3rd party autos listing at some point, as DevHub does allow quite a bit of flexibility in that regard, but it's not ideal. Event calendars, weather widgets and forums would all be welcome additions though they are not really monetized widgets... they do add value to Geo domains.

Summary

I'm not abandoning Vocav.com in favor of DevHub, that's for sure, but for a free site, setup in a matter of an hour or so, it's really not bad. DevHub would make a nice placeholder while you worked on developing out a geo domain portfolio for example and can work well for City+Service or City+Profession sites that you want to setup quickly and not have to worry about again. There is certainly room for improvement but the monetization options of the built in listings are a big leg up for folks without much time or money to develop their geo domains.

Let me know what you think of the St. Simons Island site and the DevHub platform in the comments!

DevHub is really impressive

I know, it's been around for several months now, but I just got around to really taking DevHub for a spin... and I walked away very impressed by it's ease of use, the available customizations and the very effective monetization options. There are a few short comings but for those who are either looking for a quick site setup or those who don't have the development time or skill to get themselves setup with their own site, DevHub is a great, free option that I can highly recommend.

Sprouters.info

So, one of my favorite product .info names is Sprouters.info (I also own the singular). The problem is I have very little time to do any setup of affiliates, develop unique content or market this name in order to attract the raw food fanatics or those just looking to save some money by growing their own food and making their own Wheatgrass Shooters and such. I had estimated at least 10 hours to really develop out the site and make it look good enough to eat :) Sprouters.info made the perfect test case for DevHub!

DevHub Setup

DevHub's sign up is incredibly simple and it's a completely free service. You enter your name, your website and what the site is about and you are ready to go. When you first sign up, you have 10 free sites you can create. As you develop your sites and start adding unique content to them, you'll be granted additional site credits, so don't expect to setup hundreds of sites at once like you can with services like WhyPark. But in exchange, you get a much more feature rich website, so it's a fair trade I think. DevHub wants good content as that reflects well on them and so they reward those that use their system effectively. It's a very elegant setup.
Setting up your site couldn't be easier. There are numerous layout templates and color choices to be made and these can be tweaked with background images and logos as well. You can create multiple pages and each one can be optimized - for example each page can have their own meta tags and custom built page title. You can also setup site wide scripts for things like Google Analytics, but we'll get to stat tracking later.
The really powerful feature of DevHub though is what you can add to your pages. There are numerous monetization options, such as cpa and cpc product listings, property listings and job listings (I am trying out a geo domain on DevHub next!). But you can drop onto your pages a variety of non-monetized objects as well such as autogenerated news content, widgets for things like Stocks and Games, photo galleries, blog articles and much more. They also make it very easy to add your own code so you can include your own affiliate and advertising links as well.

DevHub Stats Reporting

DevHub provides a free reporting tool for your sites that covers the basics. They show search engine traffic versus total traffic and break downs of revenue. I would highly recommend including a Google Analytics code on your sites though (or an alternative tracking system) so you can really monitor how people are finding your site, what pages are most popular, bounce rates and more... which DevHub doesn't really provide. What's there is certainly functional though for basic quick stat checking.

Summary

DevHub has a great platform. I was able to develop a very professional site with lots of features in a matter of a couple of hours (and half that time was spent on the logo :) ) and now that I've gotten comfortable with the system, I could probably spit out several sites per day. It's a great mass development platform but it does require showing that you are going to put the necessary work into the sites you create in order to be allowed to create more than 10 sites.
There are a few bugs and hiccups that I don't see as major stumbling blocks. The recipe widget for example never loaded for me, which would have been nice to have on Sprouters.info... but no major loss. I love how you can incorporate any content you want, and that there are numerous types of listing already available, but my ideal platform would allow me to create my own searchable, sortable listings and I've not seen a way to do that automatically. It will require either creating my own widget or just resorting to static html. Also, I encountered some duplicates in my product listings as multiple vendors had the same item apparently. It's kind of embarrassing to have 2 out of the 5 items I have for sale under a specific category be the same item but have 2 different prices. I'd like to see the "uniqueness" issue resolved in the future by either allowing me to override an item or just by having them choose the lowest priced one.
Finally, I'm a bit worried about SEO. The sites in their gallery are pretty much all horribly ranked. That's not to say there aren't examples out there using DevHub that are ranked well, but you'll have to use some of the time you save by creating your site quickly on good link building and such to make sure you get ranked well. I'll report back on how Sprouters.info does both in terms of revenue and search engine rankings in a few months.
You really need to check out what's possible with DevHub if you haven't already. I really believe you'll be as impressed as I am.
