I know we all have made mistakes when registering names, it happens. And I know we all own at least one domain name (and in some cases, hundreds of names) we wouldn't tell our mother about... but then there are the names that are great names, but that when you say them out loud to friends or family, all it does is illicit a laugh. I'll often cringe when having to say my domain names out loud for fear of rejection and laughter. But you all know where I'm coming from. I feel safe in sharing my names with you. So here are my top five most embarrassing names in no particular order. Feel free to share your embarrassing domain names in the comments!
SaltwaterFish.us - this as yet undeveloped site almost always gets a laugh. It also has nearly 200 advertisers and a huge number of exact match search queries a month, not to mention a number of potential uses. Did you know people spend hundreds of dollars on Living Rock for their saltwater fish tanks? But there's still something inherently funny about fish names.
BabyDoctor.tel - okay, I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking except that Pediatrician.tel was taken and when you need to get in touch with him or her, you don't want to have to fumble through a rolodex or find the yellow pages. I can just imagine a distraught mother yelling "Call the baby doctor! Call the baby doctor right now! Of course, TheDominatrix.tel is not one I plan to shout very loud about either... but secretly I think it's an awesome name. :)
WideBrimmedHats.com - I just picked this one up recently ... it covers everything from fedoras to cowboy hats. It goes along with my newly reg'd Bucket-Hats.com. Are you laughing yet?
HotAsian.me - I really did buy this one as a blogging domain for my wife. I don't know why every one thinks that's so funny... And you don't want to know what my wife said when I told her about it. Oh well, I guess I'll have to find something to put on there.
FingerGlue.com - I thought, at the time, that this would be a great, brandable domain for iPod Touch games... I've since learned a thing or two and I doubt this domain will be one that gets renewed. I still kinda think it's a potentially cool brand though. No?
So that's it. It's not likely that I'll stop registering these kinds of names anytime soon (except for maybe no more FingerGlue sites)... I was able to snag PrimeBeef.us at the Go Daddy drop auction yesterday. Believe me, it's hard to even say it with a straight face right now. But then, 20,000 people in the US searched for Prime Beef last month. So it can't be all that bad, right? I'll be giggling the whole time I make the site for it though.. and hopefully laughing all the way to the bank.
